What is ORNG (pronounced "orange")?

You've invested in deploying VIVO or Profiles, but adding new features is difficult. Open Research Networking Gadgets (ORNG) can let you add already-built features to your site in minutes, or develop new ones in hours/days.

Use Profiles or VIVO? Here's how to get started with ORNG

  1. Verify that your copy of Profiles/VIVO is ORNG-compatible
  2. Install free ORNG gadgets from the app library
  3. Build your own ORNG gadgets with simple HTML/JavaScript

How does it work?

ORNG combines two popular standards in a way that makes sense for research networking:
  • OpenSocial, a standard for writing social web apps, supported by Google, IBM, SciVerse, LinkedIn, etc.
  • VIVO RDF (Linked Open Data), a research networking data standard supported by VIVO, Profiles, Loki

Who's doing this?

  • CTSI at UCSF developed the ORNG API, created the Profiles implementation, and developed 9 gadgets
  • Wake Forest designed, built, & demoed its first Profiles gadget just two days after downloading UCSF's code
  • VIVO launched ORNG support in version 1.5
  • Profiles launched ORNG support in version 2.0
  • We're also looking to build a community of developers and a library of share-able gadgets
